SKU: BRI-108351 | Axminster Rider No. 5 1/2 Jack Hand Plane
Rider planes are suitable for home or professional use on the bench or on site. The No. 5 1/2, as the name suggests, is halfway between a No. 5 and a No. 6. Compared to the No. 5, its longer length and wider blade make a better choice for flattening boards and truing panels. The extra mass gives it more heft, a great help when doing the initial surface preparation on a board. At the same time, being slightly lighter and shorter than its larger cousin, it is more manageable, and yet equally as good for fore-plane work. The 5 1/2 makes an excellent choice for use on a shooting board.
Rider planes are fitted with a British made high quality blade. The blade is O1 high carbon steel, 3mm thick and hardened to HRC 61-64. It is capable of holding a very fine edge. It is flat, well finished and comes with a 25° bevel. These quality blades require only minimal preparation before use from new.
The plane’s main casting is ductile iron chosen for its high strength and impact resistance. The sole of the plane is flat and accurate. The plane features an adjustable frog, depth and lateral blade control and comfortable hardwood handles. The cap iron and adjusting nut are solid brass..
We are confident that Rider planes represent a good standard in traditional, quality plane manufacture and offer great value. Rider planes only require the bare minimum of initial preparation before your first thin shaving.
O1 tool steel is our choice for the blade as it offers durability, excellent wear resistance and holds a fine edge. This high carbon tool steel is relatively easy to sharpen and hone using conventional methods. A final wipe on a strop produces a very keen edge. A sharp O1 blade is a joy to use.
